As her younger sister Janet is listed by the Recording Industry Association of America as the eleventh top-selling female artist in the United States with 26 million certified albums, Billboard naming her one of the top-ten selling artists in the history of contemporary music, ranking as the ninth most successful act in the history of rock and roll, and the being second most successful female artist in pop music history, having sold over 100 million albums worldwide, La Toya (even though was not part of the Popular Jackson Five or the Jacksons) had her own share of limelight amidst the towering shadows of her more popular siblings (especially Michael and Janet).
Born on May 29, 1956, this American singer, musician, New York Times Bestselling author, songwriter, actress, and the fifth child of the famous Jackson family, had a semi-successful career as a singer throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and returned to the music spotlight in 2004 with her Billboard charting songs "Just Wanna Dance" and "Free The World". A forthcoming album entitled Startin' Over has yet to be released.
While the child molestation controversies of Michael and the weight issues and secret marriages controversies of Janet affected their career, La Toya had her share of controversies. In 1989, she ventured into modeling, she states that it was her own decision to pose nude for Playboy, showing her breasts, buttocks and pubis area. However, according to several later interviews she maintains that the 'playboy' incident was not her idea and what she did (and the things she stated in her book) was under the control and threat of violence from her then husband, Jack Gordon. She explains further that her apparent willingness to pose nude was part of her then-husband's plan to sexually exploit her for millions of dollars. She said she complied out of fear and this was not something she would have done otherwise. Her first cover and layout was one of the most successful issues in Playboy's history. At its time of release, it sold over 8 million copies, going on to become the best selling issue of the magazine ever. She posed again in Playboy in 1991 to promote her autobiography and subsequently in a 1994 video for the magazine, becoming one of the first celebrities to have a Playboy video aired. It was later revealed that Jackson initially refused to pose for the second spread and for the video, however, Gordon beat her into submission.
La Toya was also involved in a controversial feud between her brother Michael even though she and Michael were the only children of nine who followed their mother who became a devout Jehovah's Witness in 1966. This bad mouthing of La Toya against her brother Michael made her the most controversial Jackson as Michael was the most popular one. Critics suspect that her behavior was still influenced by her husband-manager Gordon. Just a funny note that in their early years, La Toya and Michael would spend some of her time (alongside their mother) evangelizing door-to-door, but still the feud happened.
